The moonlight shimmering across the ocean didn’t hold a candle to Micah’s beauty. Key Largo was a beautiful place, even in the dark, but Micah was all Wyld saw. They’d been walking along the beach for ten minutes. Wyld wasn’t sure how he hadn’t tripped. His gaze hadn’t once wavered from Micah. Barefoot and wearing nothing but shorts, he looked every bit the angel Wyld always accused him of being. The breeze coming off the ocean kept rippling his curls. Wyld’s fingers itched to touch them. This was the third town they’d been in, and Wyld hadn’t accomplished a thing business-wise. Micah was a different story. It felt like they were building something together.
Micah stopped. He stared out over the water. “It’s beautiful here.”
Wyld didn’t bother looking away from Micah. “It is.”
Micah glanced over. “I bet you’ve seen some amazing places. Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?”
“The alley behind the Den of Payne.”
A sharp laugh escaped Micah. “What?”
“That’s the first place I saw you,” Wyld explained.
“I was being serious.”
“So am I,” Wyld countered. “The first time I saw you in that alley...” Wyld shook his head.
“You were bleeding,” Micah reminded him with a smile. His smile fell. “Someone had obviously hit you.”
Wyld waved off Micah’s concern. “I deserved it. I think. Hell, I don’t know. I was pretty messed up that day. There’s no sense in boring you with what all I’d done, hoping to feel something, or I don’t know. Maybe hoping I wouldn’t ever feel anything again.” Wyld shifted from foot to foot and stared out at the ocean. The warm breeze across his skin reminded him he was alive and drove him to confess things better left unsaid. “I thought you were a hallucination at first.” A sardonic smile pulled at Wyld’s lips. He had been more fucked up that day than he cared to admit. “When you have as much material things as I do, you’re not allowed to be unhappy, because so many people have real struggles. But everyone feels the way they feel, and I was miserable.” Wyld turned his head and held Micah’s gaze. “Then you were there. Thank you. I know meeting me has been nothing but grief for you. It’s meant everything to me.”
“Meeting you hasn’t been grief for me. Why would you even think that?”
Wyld shrugged and shook his head. “You’re having to keep your phone turned off to stop people from calling to lecture you about me. You shouldn’t have to do that. I feel like I’m costing you too much.”
“Ugh,” Micah growled as he closed the distance between them. He buried his arms inside Wyld’s open shirt and wrapped them around Wyld’s waist. Micah held his stare as if trying to make Wyld comprehend his seriousness. “Everyone thinks I’m dumb. That didn’t start when I met you. It’s always been that way. Me being with you, they all think that’s just a new edition to the Micah is ridiculously naïve show.” Micah’s voice turned deep and mocking.
